Paprika (パプリカ, Papurika?) is a Japanese animated science fiction film, based on Yasutaka Tsutsui's 1993 novel Paprika, about a female detective who investigates criminal cases by entering the dreams of her subjects. The film was directed by Satoshi Kon, animated by Madhouse Studios and produced and distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment. The music was composed by Susumu Hirasawa, who also composed the soundtrack for Kon's award-winning film, Millennium Actress, and equally lauded television series, Paranoia Agent.

Its world premiere took place at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2006. It also competed at the 19th Tokyo International Film Festival from October 21—29, 2006 as the opening screening for the 2006 TIFF Animation CG Festival. It was also a part of the 44th New York Film Festival, playing on October 7, 2006. It is tentatively scheduled for theatrical releases on November 25, 2006 in Japan and May 25 2007 in the United States.

ENGLISH PEOPLE! CAN YOU F****** READ IT!?

Its not "insult by japanese animators"..IT READ ON THE NEW YORK TIMES. So blame either your animators or the New york Times for that "insult".

The movie is awesome.

thumb up Saw it... liked it.

I thought the movie was charming; not perfectly coherent but definitely enjoyable. In the end it was the music by Susumu Hirasawa that hooked me in.

thumb up American American

Yes, Americans are too stupid to understand. Your cartoons is in no way comparable to manga. Plus you people love to ruin art and good movies by making the STUPID "American version". And if you don't like people, you go to a gun shop and kill everyone!

Rude jab at American artists
Katana ( Apr 8, 2007 05:17 CEST)
I'm getting tired of this kind of anime where nothing seems to make any sense and every scene is like a metaphor. That jab at American movies in the middle was really uncalled for, and as a moviemaker myself, I feel compelled to give this a thumbs down.

thumb down japanimation....uggh
milOtis ( 1 year ago on Apr 19, 2007 03:33 GMT)

hehe, my friend and i saw the preview for this when we went to see "300" (best movie in the last 10 years by the way)...I'm referring to 300, not this POS!!

#1 - Anime is annoying as hell to watch if you are a filmmaker, or even film enthusiast...the 5-15 frames per second (fps) is not only an indication that japanese artists are in a hurry to get done with the animation, but causes eye fatigue. 24fps - 29.97fps is what the eys is comfortable viewing...anything lower than that is not good on the eye, physically! And all anime is animated in 20fps and lower, with 10fps the majority of the time.

#2 - paprika...? lol...please...did some non-english speaking japanese person just scroll thru our dictionary and see that work and think "that sounds good: Paprika it is!"...I mean what's the sequel going to be named...Nutmeg?

and #3 - the insult at "american counterparts" is very uncalled for. people hurl insults when their work can't stand on it's own two legs. that is obvious here...another backhanded tactic, to insult the competition just to build yourself up. lame
